Implemented. nobilis d4b6ab8 ("Let SASL work where it exists, and say so where it does not") and moho e080e5f ("Offer the SASL settings the pane already claimed to have").
SASL PLAIN with a setAccountSasl RPC (saslUser, password, allowPlaintextSasl). Two things worth knowing beyond the ask:
It refuses to send credentials over an unencrypted link unless you opt in, and it does not count a Tor transport as encrypted.
A CAP NAK falls back to plain registration and lets NickServ run, so a server without SASL still connects.
Only PLAIN is offered — EXTERNAL and SCRAM are not implemented. Ready to close if you agree.
